Okinawa Iejima Island Tour
Iejima (Ie Island) is one of our favorite places to visit and the Iejima Island Tour is one of our premier tours from Active Okinawa. It is also a WW2 battleground tour which was a major part of the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. We catch a ferry at Motobu Port from the main island of Okinawa Prefecture and get to Ie island’s port in approximately 30 minutes. We feel it is the perfect day trip for any visitor from around the world looking for a bit of variety in their Okinawa vacation.
The Idyllic Symbol & Vista of Mt. Gusuku (Tacchu) Calls You From The Ocean
The iconic Mount Gusuku summit, at 172 meters above sea level, draws you in when you arrive at the port after your 30-minute ferry ride. The mountain, also called ‘Tacchu’, takes 15 minutes to reach the top on a relatively steep climb. When you climb the peak of one of Okinawa’s iconic symbols you are able to enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding peanut, lily, wheat, and sugar cane fields and also all the way to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, where Ielima can be seen off the south coast.
The Contrast of GI Beach, Niya-Thiya Cave, and Ahashagama Cave
Get on a bicycle and tour the rest of the island where you will see some incredible but also sobering historic battleground sites from the fierce WWII battle of Okinawa. Listen to our experienced guides as they tell you the story of two very different caves (Niya-Thiya and Ahashagama) and their outcomes as they were used for shelter for residents during the deadly battle. Ie Island is well stocked with historic battleground sites to remind us of the real price of war.
As you head to the north side of the island you ride on the actual airstrip used in WWII by both the Japanese Forces and the American Forces when they took the island.
On the northern side, you will take in the majestic views of Wajee Point (Wajee means freshwater spring). You’ll then make your way back past the hibiscus garden and Lily Field Park where they hold the Ie Island Lily Festival every year in April where the Easter lilies flower in full bloom.
Savor Local Ie Island Cuisine and Capture Memorable Moments
Depending on the season, we dine in at a local Ie island restaurant or provide a locally made lunch box for lunch. We also provide snacks and drinks throughout the day.
Don’t forget the tour of the Santa Maria Ie Rum Distillery where you will see how the rum is made and, of course, get a wee bit of tasting after. The sweet sugarcane used to produce the rum is sourced from Ie and also water is used from the natural spring found at Wajee Point.
Be sure to bring your swimwear to cool off too as we explore some of the popular and beautiful beaches of Ie Island. (March-November)
We love a photo here at Active Okinawa and our guide will be your personal photographer. We provide you with all the data when your Iejima Island Tour has finished.
